A Guide To The World’s Best Art Prizes

If one of your New Year resolutions is to improve your craft and become well known in 2018, this blog post is for you! This is not a complete list of every art contest worldwide, but a variety of contests for with FABULOUS prizes in no particular order. Let’s go!

 

INTERNATIONAL Prizes

Artists Network’s Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition

Rules: Open to anyone in the world to enter over sixteen. There are four categories  –Portrait/Figure, Still Life/Interior, Landscape, Abstract/Experimental and Animal/Wildlife. All artwork must be original of the artist (meaning you must have taken the reference photos yourself or have permission from the photographer). Entries will be submitted online and must be two dimensional. For a complete list of rules (such as photo size), go here.

Student/Beginner Division—$15 per image

World Illustration Awards

About: One of the most prestigious contests for Illustrators based in any country working in any medium, hosted by the Association Of Illustrators with 8 categories: Advertising, Books, Children’s Books, Design, Editorial, Site Specific, Research and Experimental.

Entry Fee: $33 USD per Single Entry; $60 USD per Multiple Entry

Deadline: 6 February 2018

Age Limit: Open to  professional illustrators in the “Professional” category and undergraduate students, post-graduate students or recent graduates (entering within two years from the date of graduation) in the “New Talent” category.

Prizes: This year there are cash prizes for the two Overall Winners, sponsored by Rotring. The Overall Professional Winner will receive £2,000, and the Overall New Talent winner will receive £1,000.

The Overall Professional Winner will receive a full page in Directory of Illustration No. 35. The value is $2695 USD.

Procreate’s sponsorship of the Professional Advertising Category will award the Professional winner a package consisting of an iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate software.

Procreate’s sponsorship of the New Talent Advertising Category will award the New Talent winner a Procreate software package.

 

All category winners will be given a complimentary AOI membership for a year.

Luxembourg Art Prize

About: The Luxembourg Art Prize goal to help skilled artists who are working towards establishing themselves on the international art scene. The Prize is aimed at artists working in one or more of the following media: drawing, printing, installation, painting, performance, photography, digital art, sculpture, sound art, video, mixed media, decorative art (textiles and material, glass, wood, metal, ceramics, mosaic, paper or other techniques).

Deadline: 31 May 2018

Entry fee:  $63 USD

Rules: No age limit and open to amateur and professional artists anywhere in the world.

Prizes: The winner of the Prize in 2018 will receive an award of $29,000 USD  to fund the production of further work and an individual exhibition in a prestigious gallery. The finalist artists will be included in a group exhibition in the gallery. The Luxembourg Art Prize is a unique opportunity to enter the international professional art circuit and to have your work seen by major private and institutional art collectors. You will have the chance to be supported and personally advised by Hervé Lancelin.

 

Unlike other prizes or art salons, the Luxembourg Art Prize is designed to boost your career by exhibiting your work in an international gallery and giving you a high level of visibility.

Art Prizes In The United Kingdom

New English Art Club at their Annual Exhibition 2018

 

About: Artists are invited to submit works for exhibition alongside members of the New English Art Club at their Annual Exhibition 2018. The exhibit will be at Mall Galleries in London.

 

Deadline: Friday 23rd of February 2018

Rules: Acceptable media: Paintings, drawings, pastels, original framed prints (excluding photography). Sculpture is NOT admissible. Any artist over 18 may submit.

 

Entry fee: Submission fee: £18 per work (£12 per work for artists aged 35 or under), including Free Admission to the exhibition (normally £4)

Prizes: The Doreen McIntosh Prize: £5,000

 

NEW: The Bowyer Drawing Prize: £1,000

 

Jackson’s Art Prize: £300 worth of art materials, awarded to an outstanding work by a non-member

 

The Dry Red Press Award: The winning work will be published as a greeting card in the Dry Red Press ‘Prize Winners’ range, with royalties from the sale of the cards going to the artist

 

The Winsor & Newton Award: Art materials to the value of £500, voted for by visitors to the exhibition.

 

The Peter Ashley Framing Prize: Presented by The Artistic Framing Company: A bespoke handmade picture frame will be created for the winning artwork, to the value of £500

The Sunny Art Prize Competition and Exhibition

About:  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures.

 

“We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, ceramics and jewellery.

Deadline: June 20th 2018

Rules: Painting, Drawing, Illustration, Photography,  Printmaking. Sculpture, Ceramic, Video Art & Moving Image, Installation are accepted. Entrants must be 18 years or older.

Prizes: First Prize:£3,000, a public solo exhibition at Sunny Art Centre in London, a one month residency, and a show at our partners’ galleries.

Second Prize: £2,000, a group exhibition, a one month residency and a show at our partners’ galleries.

Milburn Art Prize

About: An annual exhibit for 2-D art works open to all artists from NSW Queensland and northern NSW.

Deadline: May 3rd, 2018

Art Prizes In The United States

 

Tallahassee International Juried Competition

About: The great part about the Tallahassee International Juried Competition is that all art mediums eligible for consideration, letting artists not feel constrained by specific formats like canvas painting or sculpture. The competition is organized by the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts and juried by faculty from the College of Fine Arts. It’s open to all artists worldwide over 18 years of age.

Deadline: February 2016

Entry Fee: $20 per 2 works

Prize: $1000 – $500

The Art Prize

About:  Any artist working in any medium from anywhere in the world can participate. Art is exhibited throughout downtown Grand Rapids—museums, bars, public parks, restaurants, theaters, hotels, bridges, laundromats, auto body shops, vacant storefronts and office spaces. Artists and venues register for the competition then find each other through an online connections process in late spring. No one at ArtPrize selects a single artist or artwork, directs an artist where to show work or directs a venue what to show. In 2016, 1,453 works created by artists from 40 states and 44 countries were exhibited in 170 venues.

Rules: Any artist 18 or older who is able to secure an exhibition venue in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to show a specially created work.

Prizes: Numerous prizes ranging from $20,000 to $200,000, with the top honor awarded by public vote.
