McCall, Idaho and Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
Donna Bernstein was drawn to horses at a young age. She would watch whatever horses she could find in her town north of Manhattan, New York, USA. She would draw and study their form and movements and anatomy eagerly.
Today, with her memory and imagination, she creates her urban equine paintings. Donna Mixes mediums and materials in her own unique and uncommon styles. When she paints her ink paintings of horses, she will sometimes not use brushes or tools to create them, just drips and directs proprietary mixtures of acrylics, water-based inks and pigments in spontaneity, letting them take and form a life of their own.
Donna’s personal blend of mediums, colors and style creates paintings that will be appealing to horse people and art collectors.
Donna has now expanded her artistic horizon to painting live at fundraisers and events, showing others her working process. When doing a live painting at an event, she is involved with a Charity Partner. A few of the notable places that she has created are: Ferdinand’s Ball during Kentucky Derby week, Ohio at the New Albany Classic, and Scottsdale in support of Family Promise AZ.
Though mostly self-taught Donna has had private studies with national and international sculptors and painters, such as: painter Robert Dash, contemporary abstractionist Christine Raymond, and modern metal sculpturist Sue Latta. She refined her sculptural technique at the Boise Art Museum. A number of these pieces have been placed in permanent collections. Her sculptures are as unique and visionary as her paintings.
“Creating my urban equine art is a bit of a bareback ride; I combine mediums in new and
regenerative ways that evoke movement, energy and life.
What gives my work its edge is a deep personal familiarity with the physical horse…
and an expansive sense that the movement is bigger than what you see.”
